Eastern Market Fire
Posted by Nathan & Valerie at 8:43 AM |
Last night I sent this text to Nathan at 1:50 AM: "I'm watching Eastern Market burn. I heard sirens and was in and out of sleep but when I smelled smoke I shot up in bed and went outside to make sure I was safe. One block away, flames are coming out of the roof of the old brick building."

For quite a while I stood with neighbors and watched firefighters on ladders extended from their trucks spray the roof, knocking tiles off with heavy pressure. Police moved 15-20 of us back to the other side of the elementary school lot that serves as an extended section of the market on weekends. It is so sad. Eastern Market is the heart of our neighborhood. I hope the neighborhood won't have to rally to get Mayor Fenty to keep his promise to rebuild the market.
