The Most Pointless Stat in Baseball
Posted by Nathan & Valerie at 7:18 PM |
I am a stat guy.
At least when it comes to baseball. Heck, I work with stats everyday in baseball. Tonight while working at the Marlins v. San Francisco Giants game I came across the most pointless stat in all of baseball.
PO/9.
Let me translate that for those of you who don't know the baseball shorthand.
That's putouts (fancy word for 'outs') per nine innings. To finish a nine inning game one team needs to record 27 outs.
The program that we get our stats from, StatsPass, actually has that as a stat category. Not too shocking that all 30 teams are averaging 27.00 outs per nine innings!
If somebody can find me an example of a nine inning baseball game where a team recorded more than 27 outs, please let me know where I can find it.
