I dug this image out of my flickr account a few minutes ago. It was taken of Thun lake in Interlaken, Switzerland back in the fall of 2006 on a personal trip with the wife.
I wanted to keep the forground (water and rocks) as is since they have a good shade but darken up those trees a bit.
So I just quickly added a layer mask for the trees and tinkered a bit with the branches hanging out over the water and presto:

YOu are doing great. Much better than me. I emailed you back, but wanted to also remind you of a portrait lens. For indoor the 50mm is perfect. It is my favorite lens. I think everyone who shoots portraits has one. I have the 1.4, but there is also a 1.2 & 1.8. The 1.2 is ridiculously expensive, but the 1.4 is aomewhere around $280 at b&h and the 1.8 $100. Check into them. I use the 85mm 1.8 outdoors. There's usually not enough room for it inside. YOu will see a MAJOR difference with a 50mm lens. You will love it with the new little man!!
